Weblog: A few days off

<< Previous Entry | Next Entry >>

It turns out that we did finish the block on the 29th, although we worked after 1pm for an extra hour (it rained a fair bit while we were working and everything was wet, so the actual risk of fire was very small). The next morning, we left for Prince George at 3:30 and finally arrived in town at around 2:30pm (after a detour to Mackenzie to drop off the trailers at a logging camp there). Some of the trucks ran out of gas on the way, and others ended up going to the wrong camp and probably added a couple of hours to the trip, but we had no such problems.

We have three days off in Prince George, five days off if you count the day driving from Ospika and the half day of driving to Blackwater. I figured that with the extra day off (I had only expected two) it would be worth it to fly to Victoria, based on what I'd heard about ticket prices. When we arrived in PG I quickly returned the books I had borrowed from the library and took the airporter to the airport. Unfortunately, plane tickets are much more expensive for same day travel, and it would have cost me more than $500 for a round-trip to Vancouver, so I'm staying in PG. It seems strange to me that, on a day when far fewer than the usual number of people fly due to being in the middle of a holiday (the airporter driver told me that planes that usually hold 100 people only have 15-20 on them today), the airline wouldn't discount prices to get the seats filled. It's too bad the timetable for work is so unpredictable, because that makes it just about impossible to buy a ticket ahead of time.

My crew and Felix's were all staying at The Ranch, a motel near downtown, so I headed over there and then took in a movie (The Italian Job, a standard hiest flic) and headed to the library before going to sleep. Most of the others went out partying (one ended up spending the night in jail, but they say that the PG police toss you in jail for just about anything, and he doesn't remember anything).

Today passed really quickly. I slept in, took in another movie (The Hulk, which was disappointing considering that it was directed by Ang Lee), and bought some trail runners at Coast Mountain. Some of the guys are wearing sneakers for brushing and like it because they are so light, which is why I'm trying the trail runners (they have a better tread than normal sneakers). I'm not sure about the shoes yet, but I'm wearing them around town and I can return them if I don't like them.

Right now a bunch of the guys have gone up Connaught Hill to take in the Canada Day fireworks, but it's raining pretty hard so as usual I'm staying in.

Tomorrow will be a day of shopping for supplies, but for the most part I'm enjoying not doing much of anything.

I am having some trouble accessing my e-mail, which I'm kind of happy about since I don't want to face the mountain of spam that is sure to have accumulated during the month I was away. Please CC anything important to [Aug 24, 2003: e-mail address removed to prevent spamming].
