Weblog: Mexico Day 16: Mexico City to Canada

After an early morning walk around the zocalo, where there was a huge running event going on, and a liesurely breakfast (provided free by the hostel, always a nice touch) it was time to be on my way to the airport. I had originally planned to take a taxi, but after studying the Metro map, decided to take the Metro instead. For some reason the Zocalo station was closed, so I had to walk to the next nearest one.

I'm kind of obsessed with metro systems. Whenever I'm in a city that has one, I can easily spend a day riding it from one end of the city to the other, studying all the stations and differences in trains, watching the people. Because large parts of most metros are elevated, it gives me a perspective on the city that I otherwise could not get, and allows me to see a lot of a city in a short time. Mexico City's metro is huge, one of the largest in the world, and also incredibly cheap (only 2 pesos per trip). It runs on rubber wheels and is like Montreal's system in other ways too. One unique feature is that all the stations were identified by an icon in addition to the name. It's too bad I didn't get to explore it more, but the trip to the airport involved changing lines three times and I got to see the biggest station in the city.

I reached the airport 3 hours early, checked in and got a good seat, and the trip was over.

I think this was my most difficult transition from travelling back to normal life yet. It truly felt like I was returning to someone else's life, and it took a few weeks for the feeling to wear off and to get back into routine.
