Weblog: Mexico Day 14: Benito Juarez to Puebla
<< Previous Entry | Next Entry >>
A couple of times a week, there is a bus from Benito Juarez to Oaxaca that leaves at five in the morning and returns in the late afternoon. Thankfully, 5am in Benito Juarez is 6am in the rest of Mexico, so I got an extra hour of sleep. The bus (photographs in the yesterday's log) is painted and reminds me of the Sierra Club bus in B.C.
The bus ride back reminds me that I forgot to mention that on the bus ride to Benito Juarez, we passed El Tule. This tree is promoted as being the largest living organism in the world. I had been disappointed in Oaxaca that I hadn't had a chance to visit it, so at least I got to see it from the bus.
Once back in Oaxaca, I made a quick trip back to the hostel to drop off the book for Amara and say hello to the folks there, and have breakfast, using up the last of the cereal and milk that I had left at the hostel. I walked to the first-class bus station and got a bus to Puebla.
The bus trip was probably the least scenic off all the travelling I did. Mostly through very dry valleys with little vegetation. There were some beautiful canyons, and the cactus forest was cool.
From CAPU, the Puebla bus terminal, I cought a local bus to Tonantzintla and arrived about half an hour before sunset, so the timing was perfect, since I don't like to take the bus at night because I can't recognize the landmarks. I met Ed at INAOE and after a brief trip home, we drove to Puebla to meet Natacha for dinner. First we went to Walmart to pick up some BBQ chicken. I was surprised by the quality of Walmart's deli section, it was far better than anything I've seen in Canada. Then, we got lost on the way to pick up Natacha from the university. Once that was rectified, we had dinner at her place and went to sleep early in preperation for our trip to Mexico City the next day.
