Weblog: Mexico Day 6: San Cristobal to Juchitan

Since we hadn't made it to Chamula the day before, we drove there before continuing on our way to Juchitan, just accross the border with Oaxaca. A nice town, and it was interesting to hear everyone speaking in the local Indian language. It would have been nice to have more time to actually get to understand what goes on in these villages... I was feeling very much like a real tourist at this point, just glimpsing the surface of things without knowing anything about what goes on underneath.

We then drove for most of the day, this time down, down, down, again lots of jungle and vistas. In fact some of the most beautiful scenery I have every seen. Once we had reached see level, the road became very straight and filled with lorries. At one point, traffic was stalled and there was a long, long linup. I was wondering what the cause was, so I got out and walked along. I had just gotten close enough to see that there was an obstruction, what appeared to me to be a roman-style classical building on the road, but then I hurried back as traffic was beginning to flow from the other direction. Once we started moving, we passed the obstruction: a huge flatbed truck carrying what looked like a massive turbine, as wide as the entire road. Were they trying to drive this thing the whole length of that road?

Finally around nightfall we arrived in Juchitan. To be continued...
