Weblog: Updates

<< Previous Entry | Next Entry >>

It's been a while since I've posted anything here (and even longer since I've posted any text), so I guess it's time for a brief update.

First off, while Alexis and I had originally agreed to do our caretaking gig on Parker Island until June, when the previous caretakers were to return, we will now be staying indefinitely. We're both enjoying the place and the isolation, and are able to keep doing our other jobs through the magic of wireless Internet. We've been going a bit further afield with the boat, making occasional trips to Ganges on Saltspring Island, and even to Sidney while the ferry dock on Galiano is being replaced.

Last week I took a kayak accross Trincomali Channel to Prevost Island and camped out overnight there, and then explored some of the tiny little islets nearby. I placed two geocaches, one on Prevost Island, and another on Hawkins Islet. Alexis, Zeke and I have been enjoying searching out some of the caches on Galiano as well.

Work-wise, Pocket Kingdom: Own the World, the game for the Nokia N-Gage that I worked on for a couple of months in the summer, has been released and is getting mixed reviews.

I spent December and January doing all the programming and part of the design for myu.com.tw, a site that connects language students with teachers in Taiwan. So go sign up if you're in Taiwan and are teaching or learning a language!

I just finished implementing and doing part of the design for artist and friend Natalie Shumka's web site.

In the mean time, I'm also working part-time on a small game project that is not yet public.

Alexis and I finally got her application for Permanent Residence in Canada sent out. It took until mid-January before we had all her police clearances back (from the FBI and every state she lived in), her medical exam was on Feb 16, and then it took a while to put all the forms and supporting documentation together. After spending much of the last week going over it with a fine-tooth comb (and using up an entire ink-jet cartridge making printouts and photocopies), the 72-page "thesis of romance" (as Alexis likes to call it) is on its way! Now the waiting game begins. We don't expect to hear anything for six months (which is how long it takes before anyone even looks at it). Hopefully everything is in order and they will grant "approval in principle" then, after which it usually takes about two months to actually get permanent residence. That's the best case scenario, anyway - our case is pretty simple so hopefully there won't be any complications.

Update: I also gave my web site a much-needed facelift. It could still use some work, but is looking a bit better I think. Also, I finally updated my personal info page (mainly because Lee tells me it's time to mention that I'm no longer single) and resume.
