Weblog: Hiking

I went on a great hike today to Minna's Ridge (N49 07.646 W124 30.863 WGS-84) with the Alberni Valley Outdoot Club. This has to be one of the most beautiful places I've ever been on the Island, I just had no idea this kind of environment existed here. I thought you had to go to the Olympic Mountains or the Rockys (or the Alps) for this kind of alpine meadow. So many flowers. My digital camera doesn't work anymore so no photos right now, but I had a disposable camera with me so when I get those pictures developed I'll post the good ones. Met some great people as well, I definitely want to do on some more hikes with this group. I usually don't like hiking in big groups because, well, the hikes tend to be really slow going and lame, but this group is great. The pace was slower than my usual, but that's probably a good thing because I tend to tire myself out.
Yesterday I went for a shorter hike by myself to Cameron Ridge, where a geocache is located. Another beautiful hike, though I lost the trail at one point after going the wrong direction and following felling boundary flags instead of the flags that indicated the trail. Also one I'll post pictures for once they're developed.
In the mean time, here's a great photo Harvey took of me. I took a dip in one of the glacial pools at the top of the ridge (actually not all that cold, I stayed in for quite a while), this is me getting out. That's snow I'm walking on, by the way.
On another note, I'm really enjoying the programming I'm doing at work right now. I've been pretty tired of writing software for quite a while now, so I'm happy that I'm getting my passion for it back. I feel like I'm writing real programs again (rather than what I was doing, which seemed to be more infrastructure (moving letters and numbers around) than anything real). I also just feel that in the grand scheme of things, creating games does a lot more good in the universe than software to manage users of a stock trading web site.
I never really was a big fan of swimming in the ocean, but lately I've been going swimming at Rathtrevor Beach just about every day, sometimes after work and sometimes around lunchtime (it's a few minutes' drive from the office), and really loving it. Can a place get much better than this? Incase you can't tell, I'm very pleased with the move (yes, I know I've said this a hundred times, but I like it that much!).
